“If there was just one show that fully embraced the creative brief for the Great Salt Lake Fringe this year, it would easily be the Beyond the Line Theatre staging of the wholly absurd delight of the 1896 play Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry… Reynosa’s staging has all of the proper froth for such schoolboy mischief. The actors revel in the shit in the most positive and applause-deserving ways... The audience is involved too, with instructions provided by projected cues and a battle scene with pool noodles.”
Les Roka, The Utah Review
“As can be gleamed by the characters’ names, the play is both serious — the King is murdered, his crown taken, as Papa Turd commences to destroy Poland — and lively: there is a scene where audience members are invited to go into “the trap” as the new King of Poland begins to kill his magistrate, the judiciaries, and even average every day citizens such as parents who use their kids to make TikTok content and Judy Garland… The projector cues the audience when to boo, cheer, or scream. Audience members are also invited to join the play — though not in speaking roles — such as when there is a giant noodle fight between everyone to simulate a battle during the war.”

Papa Turd, a grotesque, greedy man, who is hungry for power, is convinced by his wife to kill the king of Poland. There's a ghost, war, a bear, and everyone dies (classic). This absurd parody of Shakespeare's Macbeath, Hamlet, and King Lear shocked and offended audiences with how obscene it was when it premiered in Paris in 1896; hope you don't offended or entangled in the chaos.
